Ben Burton Nominated for Student Official of the Year

We are proud to announce that Ben Burton has been nominated for the Edinburgh University Sports Union Student Official of the Year Award, following a remarkable season both on the pitch and within the leadership of the club.

Ben has had an exceptional year as an umpire, officiating an incredible 61 matches on behalf of the Edinburgh University Men’s Hockey Club during the 2024/25 season. From BUCS clashes to Scottish league weekends, Ben's availability, consistency, and sharp officiating made him an indispensable part of the club’s weekly rhythm.

His talent has not gone unnoticed beyond the university circuit. Domestically, Ben has umpired consistently at a high level, including frequent appointments in BUCS Premier North, the second top tier of university hockey. His performances were characterised by control, fairness, and a deep understanding of the game.

Internationally, Ben has taken major strides. He officiated both junior and senior international matches, including fixtures involving the Scottish Men’s National Team during their pre-FIH Nations Cup 2 camp, a notable opportunity at the elite level. He was also appointed to the EHL U19 Tournament in Amsterdam over Easter weekend, where the top eight boys' and girls' teams in Europe competed. Being trusted with such a prestigious event speaks volumes about his maturity and competence under pressure.

His achievements culminated in an invitation to join the Scottish Hockey Performance Umpires Group, marking him out as one of the most promising young officials in the country.

But Ben’s impact has gone far beyond the matches he’s umpired.

In a historic first for the club, Ben became the first-ever first-year student to be elected to the committee, taking on the pivotal role of Umpire Secretary. He managed the club’s entire officiating schedule across all teams and matches, coordinating weekly appointments and ensuring a high standard of officiating throughout the season. His ambition to improve the quality and visibility of umpiring in the club has already left a lasting legacy.

Ben’s nomination reflects not only his individual excellence as an official but also his commitment to growing the sport and improving opportunities for others. His presence on the committee, on the pitch, and in the wider umpiring community has been transformational.

Congratulations Ben!
