Florian Garland Hoff Shortlisted for the McTernan Colour of the Year

It’s hard to imagine Edinburgh University Men’s Hockey Club without Florian Garland Hoff, and it’s only right that he has now been shortlisted for the McTernan Colour of the Year — an award that recognises exceptional voluntary contribution to sport at the University.

Over his incredible four-year tenure, Florian has worn more hats than most of us own. From National Fixtures Secretary to Vice President, and ultimately President in 2024/25, Florian’s impact on the running of EUMHC has been nothing short of transformational. His leadership has been marked by unwavering commitment, long hours, and a seemingly infinite supply of green stash.

But Florian’s contribution goes far beyond committee meetings and spreadsheets. He has coached across both the Men’s and Women’s Clubs, selflessly giving his time and tactical wisdom to help grow the game for players of all levels.

Legend has it — and we can neither confirm nor deny this — that he has played for every single team in the club, from the heights of the 1XI to the glorious chaos of the 7s. Wherever there’s been a late call-up, a fixture clash, or a kit catastrophe, Florian has answered the call — often on WhatsApp within seconds, ready with a plan.

He has been the heartbeat of the club, a mentor, a fixer, and a true club man in every sense. Whether it’s pulling the strings behind the scenes or standing on a frosty sideline at Peffs, Florian has done it all — not for accolades, but for love of the club.

His blood bleeds green, and his legacy will be felt for years to come.

Thank you Flo. This nomination is just a small reflection of the colossal contribution you’ve made to the lives of everyone who’s pulled on a green shirt.
