About |
Edinburgh University Hockey Club is one of the largest clubs the University has to offer. With 7 men teams and 8 women teams, this club caters for all. One of the key things about the club is achievement, but it isn't everything, with one of the best active social lifes of any of the Edinburgh clubs. You will often find us all in the pub after a days hard work on the hockey field.
Pitch side
We train at the National Scottish Hockey Academy pitches at Peffermill (see directions), which is home to two great water-based astroturf pitch, one of which has been newly laid during the summer of 2008. But what makes the club is the excellent training we are subjected to, with fully qualified hockey coaches, including the coach of the Women's Great British Olympic team, Dennis Hay, who coached his team to Olympic bronze.
Which team is for me...
We cater for a huge variety of players, from those who play with the 1st XI competing against international players in National 1 League, all the way to those who can barely lift a stick off the ground and just want to keep fit and have a good social life. There will be a team for you, that will provide you with relevant coaching to improve your hockey. With training sessions throughout the week, and matches taking place on Wednesday, for SUCS and BUCS, and Saturday for all the other leagues, there is plenty to get your nails into. We play in a wide range of leagues, allowing each team to play other teams at or around the same skill level as them.

If fancy trying your hand at some coaching or umpiring, the club provides you with opportunities to participate in coaching and umpiring courses.
We pride ourselves in having a vast array of excellent umpires at our disposal, however we are always looking for more, as without umpires... we can't play games! So we're really keen to find people who love wearing yellow and can blow a whistle really loud!
This all sounds a bit serious to me...
We are always striving to be one of the highest achieving clubs in Edinburgh, but this doesn't detract from the social side of the club. We have regular social events, ranging from Pub Golf, to just a few drinks at The Crags, one of our sponsors. Most teams will frequent The Crags after each of their matches for some match teas. Every year we go on a Hockey Tour to a different venue, where we put our hockey and drinking skills to the test. As well as this there is an annual hockey ball in a posh hotel for everybody to show off their gladrags!
