Tom Johnston (2s coach) One Minute Interview
What was your first job?
Sports development officer in Berwick-upon-Tweed. My first proper coaching job was with Trinity women's Hockey Club – In my first season the team were unbeaten!
Best and Worst parts of being a coach?
Best - when players do the things you want them to in a game and come off and say that really works! Worst - when players don't turn up to training and turn up to games hung over and cant play properly.
In a Hollywood film of your life who would play you?
I think Brad Pitt as he one of the few that can match my good looks! He might have to work on the accent!
Where did you last go on holiday?
At Christmas, went to Texas, the swamps and New Orleans for new year. It was my brothers birthday on a plantation. I recommend New Orleans for a good party.
Reveal something about yourself that not many people know?
I play the saxophone – I played a lot at school and college but no so much now. I played in a few swing/jazz bands in the holidays. Sport has taken over my free time!
Favourite film and TV programme?
Film - The Shawshank Redemption. TV - Waking the Dead
Favourite Joke?
Not sure – still not happy I got caught by Callum Duke and the crossword joke. “Postman has lost sack”...”how many letters?”. Ha, ha
If you ruled the world, what would you do first?
Put under pitch heating at Peffermill – My feet are not happy about being frozen solid every winter!
If you could liken yourself to anyone currently playing in the club, who would it be?
When I was playing, I did a lot of running – similar to Neil McNiven! Unlike Neil, I didn't have much skill so I to work hard to make up for it! If it's just on facial similarities though, it has to be Hendo.
What do you consider your greatest achievment?
Depends on what context – Sporting wise representing my county in various sports, getting my masters at Edinburgh is one, managing Scotland U21 to the Gold in Gibraltar is a hockey one.
Finally, can you imagine a world without hockey?
No! Hockey beats other sports for pace, team strategy and skill.

Congratulations to Michael Witchell, Duncan Birse, Andrew Campbell, David Forester, Steven Morrison and Calum Duke who have been selected to represent Scottish Universities at the forthcoming Home Nations Tornament. The event is actually down at Peffermill so if anyone would like to see some quality hockey, head on down. The matches are as follows:
Tuesday 13th April: 4pm v Northern Ireland
Wednesday 14th April: 4pm v Wales
Thursday 15th April: 2pm v England
Varsity
A huge thank you to anyone who came down to support the first team at Varsity. I know the team really appreciated it and hopefully you enjoyed it. For those who werent there, we ran out convincing 4-0 winners (read Journal article here) whilst the womens team hammered Watt 8-1. Edinburgh also regained the overall Varsity crown for the 15th time running (Disclaimer: pure guess).
Scottish Hockey and Fantasy Hockey League Tables
Just a note to say that all the tables will be published in April's newsletter once all the statistics have been compiled.
