Matchreport

After a busy week for many in the squad the game against Falkirk was eagerly anticipated. With many eager to see a Rob Hill special dance and with the team being warned not to smile at the opposition, the squad assembled at Peffermill. Once again Pete Rutherford and Sandy Hendry turned up last with many wondering what they actually do on a Saturday morning together.

It is a testament to the 6th XI squad that despite missing three key players, the squad was as a strong as ever and with Falkirk missing the infamous Danny, confidence was high with the loss against Grange still sore in the mind. During the warm up El Capitino reminded the Uni players that smiling at the opposition was forbidden and no one was to have any fun.

The game started with Uni dominating with some good line work by captain Theo O-P and forward Hamish Tate. Falkirk struggled to get the ball out of their 25 and anytime they did Craig Fernie, Ross Reid and Charles Jamieson were more than equal to the task clearing up well at the back. Not for the first time Uni couldn't turn pressure into goals during the first ten minutes of the game and really should have been at least one up, with the best chance falling to Fraser Murphy, who showed his commitment by sprawling across the D, just missing the bobbling ball before crashing into the far post head first.

Uni did manage to win a series of short corners but quick legs from the Falkirk runners put Rob Hill under pressure at the top of the D and these chances weren't converted.

Enter Mr Lacey. After much debate from other players it was decided that Mr Lacey should play up top and within 5 minutes of being on the pitch a superb top D ball from the wing led to a goal bound sweep from Tom that just evaded the diving keeper and ended up in the back of the goal. 1-0 Uni. The rest of the half passed without incident and Uni went into the break holding a slender lead against a much improved Falkirk team both in terms of players but also in terms of chat.

Mr O-P and Mr Ross "Solid" Reid gave their usual half time banter punctuated with the wise advice of Dennis with Mr Hill remembering to bring the oranges this week (which earned him a MOM vote for "Bringing the oranges" but a DOD vote for "the quality of the oranges").

The beginning of the second half took much the same form as the first with Uni playing some quality Dennis Hay hockey but the Falkirk defence again stood strong with Uni missing a few half chances.

Sandy provided the most entertainment by picking up a great ball from the back and turned to find space and only three Falkirk players in front of him. However, instead of making the most of Harry Gilmore’s 40 yard run he instead stood still. After surveying the landscape for what seemed like forever Mr Hendry in his undoubted wisdom started juggling the ball with the nearest Falkirk player about 20 yards away. This was definitely shit chat from Mr Hendry and earned him the DOD title.

There is speculation as to whether or not this caused the skilful Falkirk no. 9 to throw an eppy but he had one which looked similar to that of a 3 year old. Umpire Connor Bond was having none of it and promptly green carded the player who continued to back chat and nearly earned himself a sin binning. After being told to "take a chill pill" he eventually calmed down.

After this moment Falkirk began putting pressure on Uni with long balls from the back finding the gaps in the Uni press. A game of ping pong began with balls being smashed form 25 to 25 and the game started resembling the England Rugby Team - utter shit.

Uni managed to hang on despite a close call in the dying minutes of the game after Big Tom McDermid saw the ball flash past his post. A 1-0 result for uni was a good result against a very good Falkirk team. Tom Lacey's goal earned him Man of the Match with Sandy’s silky but pointless skills earning him yet another Dick of the Day award.

Uni dominated most of the game and if they put their chances away in the remaining two games then two more wins are definitely on the cards. Thanks to Connor for umpiring the game, he had a very good game and thanks to Falkirk for not killing anyone.

Bring on the 5s.
