Wanderers (0) 2 Vs. Gamblers (1) 1 – 21/11/9, Kennington Park
First defeat of the season – not a happy place for the team as we are now potentially going to drop into 2nd place following our domination of top spot since we reached the heady heights. The match was never going to be great for the Gamblers as it was arranged for 9.30 – perhaps a tactical decision by the home team. Having said this, we managed to turn up before all of the opposition had arrived and, once we had gotten over the extortionate fines that are now being imposed for lateness, settled into a warm-up. When the opposition did arrive they looked somewhat more up for it than any of us – and this was to prove the case during the match.
The same old routine seemed to play itself out, however. First half we were fairly dominant, the majority of chances coming for our attack as well as numerous short-corners throughout the half. There were a few times when the Gamblers were hit on the break though and as we hadn’t scored could well have been two down from quick breaks, after facing a 4 on 2 defensive situation – perhaps this should have proved as a warning. As it was, we kept the clean sheet in the first half and managed to convert one of the short-corners after the ball was passed right to Makin, who after a deft piece of skill passed to Williams. The Leicester duo combining to provide a quality finish, just like old times. However the question to be posed – would the Gamblers rue the missed chances?
After the break a different Gamblers team stepped out. Gone were the sweeping, champagne movements of two touch pass and move, and in came the 4/5 touch hockey. This caused numerous problems – for some reason the defence decided that holding position and tracking back were not part of the game plan, the midfield held onto the ball too long meaning that open passes disappeared and were easily intercepted, and the attack decided that they would rather wait for the ball to come to them thus letting the defence step in front or would try to take the ball through flat sticks. Despite having the majority of possession therefore the Gamblers simply couldn’t find the attacking form of previous games (last season I refer to, of course). Short-corners continued to be awarded and continued to be squandered making the (unofficial) stats read: “awarded short-corners 1,000,000; converted short-corners 1”.
And so to the result, two break-away goals were scored by the Wanderers who, at times, found themselves 5 on 1 in attack (the 1 being the “Luckster” which is probably why he was awarded MOM, as without him more goals would no doubt have been conceded). The Gamblers inability to pass/dribble/track-back allowed the Wanderers the time and space to pass the ball into the back of the net twice. Both goals came from positions where Gamblers should have scored – tackles were made in their 25 and some rapid passing up the pitch enabled the opposition attack to stretch the defence and caused Max to be (as Max’s father should have done) pulled out of position at the vital moment. Not an undeserved victory for Wanderers but I think we now know how Camberley and Farnborough must have felt. To be fair to the Wanderers, as the Gamblers did against C&F, they didn’t stop putting the effort in and got their just desserts.
All in all not a great day on the pitch for the Gamblers, and while I did get DOD I think we should have cancelled the vote as contenders were numerous. Some lessons to be learnt which will no doubt be worked on if people turn up to training, and the key question raised of how to score a short-corner…
